Emery's Arsenal far worse than any of Wenger's last four seasons

12.11.2019.

Reputable sources close to Arsenal recently stated that the club's executives are not even considering sacking Unai Emery, and are behind him 100%. Even a quick look at the table makes it clear that the Gunners are mostly firing blanks, with the team having half the point tally of the league leaders Liverpool. The Champions League space is eight points away, the team had controversy regarding its captaincy, but a deeper dive into the numbers looks even more worrying.

After four wins, five draws and three losses, Arsenal has 17 points in 12 matchdays. Which is the worst record than any side had under Arsene Wenger in his last four years.

Actually, the Gunners are recording their worst opening in 12 games since 1982/1983. But the last four Wenger seasons illustrate the size of the problem at Emirates perfectly as that period wasn't regarded as satisfactory by Arsenal fans. Even in 2016 there were talks of changing Wenger. But Emery doesn't have the eight of the credit the Frenchman had with the fans.

In 2015, after 12 matchdays, the team was second in Premier League with 26 points. It ended up finishing in that place with Leicester City winning the title. The following year the team had a pointless from 12 matches, with the same goal difference +13. But were ranked fourth. In that year, Arsenal missed on a Champions League place.

2017 was the worst start Wenger had, after 12 games, the point toll was 22 with a +16 goal difference. The team was sixth in this time of the year. 2018 was a slight improvement with 24 points collected and a goal difference of +11.

After 12 matches in 2019/2020 season, Arsenal's current team has a negative goal difference of -1! That's a 17 goal differential than the worst Wenger season.

It's worth noting that Wenger's 2017 team didn't have Pierre Emerick Obameyang. The current side has seen far larger investments than the squads Wenger had at his disposal in the last seasons.
